Lithium Energy Japan

Mitsubishi and GS Yuasa have joined forces to produce lithium-ion batteries for the automotive industry

A new joint venture will establish mainstream production of lithium-ion batteries for automotive and industrial applications.

Named 'Lithium Energy Japan', the venture is a collaborative effort by Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and GS Yuasa Corporation.

The company will manufacture large capacity, high performance batteries which will inevitably find their way into the next generation of full electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

In essence, the partners in Lithium Energy Japan are getting in on the ground floor of what they expect will be drastically heightened demand for energy storage devices in future -- the lithium-ion battery being the most practical type of technology for this purpose currently available.

Yuasa is well known as an expert in the field of battery technology. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has the incentive before it to develop electric vehicles which would benefit from lower cost, high-volume lithium-ion battery production.

The newly formed company aims to produce 200,000 units for the 2009 fiscal year.
