Toyota Australia says the input gained from its local engineers will ensure the next-generation Yaris will be better suited to local conditions and driver expectations when it arrives here this October.
The new light hatch, as previewed at the Australian International Motor Show in July, has received significant chassis development work from Toyota Australia's Technical Centre in Melbourne. Steering calibration and suspension tune are adapted for a sharper, more responsive feel which Toyota says Australian drivers prefer.
According to Toyota, the electrically-assisted power steering in new Yaris will offer a more direct feel, the type of feedback it says is "appreciated in this market". At the same time, the city car promises greater levels of assistance at low speeds and a tight turning circle (9.4m) for improved around town manoeuvrability.
Certain to also prove a hit with those wanting to stretch their wings, Yaris' handling is also said to benefit from improved body rigidity that will limit torsional loads through its body structure, while reduced suspension travel aids better handling and grip.
Despite the increase in body strength, Toyota says its new Yaris is lighter than the predecessor. Coupled with aerodynamic improvements and "new engineering and design technologies", new Yaris should be even more fuel efficient than the model it replaces.
The new Toyota Yaris will be launched in Australia in October.
