London Taxi Co has announced it has won a 10-year contract worth more than $80 million to supply its iconic London black cab to both Australia and New Zealand.
The deal grants London Taxi (Australia) Ltd exclusive rights to sell and distribute the TX4 model, a arrangement that is said to be worth at least 1000 taxis.
The British-based car-maker, bought by Chinese automotive giant Geely, says that at least 200 TX4 cabs will be exported this year alone.
Perth is just one Australian city expected to benefit. It already has a 100-strong fleet of TX4s on the road.
Last year parent company, Geely, said it would invest more than $550 million in a new manufacturing facility near Coventry in the UK as part of an initiative to boost production to more than 36,000 vehicles a year -- more than 10 times the number it currently makes.
London Taxi (Aust) Ltd co-owner, Elgan Potter, commenting on the distribution deal said: “Together, we look forward to raising the standards in the taxi industry in Australia.”
Geely has already announced that its purpose-built taxi is currently being re-engineered to be considered an ultra-low emission vehicle in all major European cities. It’s not known when the new greener cabs will arrive.
