Arguably the star of the recent Bologna Motor Show, was not Ferrari's FXX, nor the latest commuter from Vespa. It was the biggest passenger car Italian marque, Fiat, has ever built!
Dubbed the Oltre Fiat, the go-anywhere SUV is an unashamed tilt at US mega-fourbie builder and GM affliate HUMMER.
Built in conjunction with partner marque, Iveco, the big Fiat is nearly five metres long and over two metres tall and boasts a three-tonne payload.
The Oltre is based on the Iveco Light Multi-role vehicle, a new military off-road vehicle that embodies cutting edge technical features and has won the FCLV (Future Command and Liaison Vehicle) contract for the British Army and has also been chosen for deployment by the Italian Army.
The vehicle features all-independent coil spring suspension, six-speed auto transmission and and a smart all-wheel-drive system that features front, rear and centre locking diffs.
It boasts an impressive 500mm of ground clearance and can negotiate a lateral gradient of up to 40 per cent, and longitudinal gradients of 80 per cent. Its standard fording depth is 850mm, however, Fiat says this can be boosted to 1500mm with exhaust (and presumably intake) extensions.
The Oltre's Iveco F1C 3.0-litre four-cylinder common rail turbodiesel engine delivers 136kW at 3700rpm with peak torque of 456 Nm at 1800rpm.
A far cry from the Bambino for sure...
