Lotus Australia sales surge

British sports car brand proving more popular than ever

Lotus Australia sales are surging on the back of strong demand for both its outgoing Elise and Exige models and the incoming Lotus Emira coupe.

Sales have been steady in recent years, Lotus Australia recording annual figures of 62 (2017), 56 (2018), 57 (2019) and 59 (2020) before a small uplift to 71 in 2021.

However, 58 cars have already been sold as of April 2022 – an increase of more than 176 per cent year-to-date – thanks to customers clamouring for Final Edition variants of the Elise and Exige, which have now been discontinued as the company transitions to a new era of electrification.

What’s more, Lotus Australia’s Director of Sales and Strategy, Richard Gibbs, told carsales the company could have sold its allocation of Final Edition models twice over –such was the demand from local enthusiasts.

The good times look set to continue, too, with Lotus Australia holding 120 orders for its forthcoming Emira, which is expected to be the final internal combustion-powered vehicle from the brand.

This figure also accounts only for V6 orders, with the cheaper four-cylinder variant still to come in early 2023. According to Gibbs, the Emira is also successfully expanding Lotus’ customer base, with 86 per cent of depositors new to the brand.

Lotus Australia has also received strong customer interest in the forthcoming Eletre electric SUV, with 200 expressions of interest and 10 deposits despite no pricing or specification details yet being announced for the local market.
