Lotus Evija electric hypercar named

British brand blasts back into limelight with battery-powered 350km/h road rocket

After weathering tough times in the recent past, Lotus appears to on the comeback trail, announcing the name of its new flagship, the all-electric Lotus Evija hypercar.

According to Lotus, the name -- pronounced with a silent 'j' (ev-eye-a) -- means 'the living one' or 'first to exist' and this vague photo of the interior shows its digital instrument display and little else.

Several other teaser photos of the 350km/h ballistic Briton, formerly named the Lotus Type 130, have been released previously.

While the car won't be revealed until July 16 in London, a sneak preview of the Lotus Evija will be on show at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

What we know so far is that the Lotus land missile will enter production in 2020, with just 130 units to be built.

The Evija will be a pure EV tipped to get two electric motors in an all-wheel drive layout. Power output is understood to be around 750kW and with compact dimensions and a low(ish) weight, Lotus doesn't mind bragging that it will be the world’s most "dynamically accomplished road car".

That's a big boast. Especially considering low-volume hypercars like the Mercedes-AMG ONE and Aston Martin Valkyrie are about to set the production car world alight.

With a range of around 400km from a lithium-ion battery pack, which may be capable of fast-swapping out for track days, the car could be very rapid in a straight line, rivalling the likes of the Rimac hyper-EV with a 0-100km/h sprint time of about two seconds.

"Evija is the perfect name for our new car because it’s the first hypercar from Lotus, our first electric offering and is the first new model under the stewardship of Geely," said Lotus CEO Phil Popham.

Lotus now has Chinese backing after it was taken over by Volvo's parent company Geely (aka Zhejiang Geely Holding Group), which allegedly injected more than $2 billion dollars into the British brand to kickstart its resurgence.

With a strong motorsport history, including two F1 race wins, all eyes will be on the Evija to see if the rejuvenated UK marque can walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

"The Evija is a Lotus like no other, yet a true Lotus in every sense. It will re-establish our brand on the global automotive stage and pave the way for further visionary models," declared Popham.
