Lucid teases a Model Y rival for 2026

US EV pioneer Lucid Motors has previewed its first mainstream model with the release of a shadowy teaser image of an unnamed medium SUV at an event in Arizona.

Confirmed to enter production in late 2026 priced from US$50,000 ($A75,000) in the US, the Lucid mid-sizer has been created as a direct rival for the best-selling Tesla Model Y.

Based on an all-new platform, the new SUV will come equipped with the US brand’s next-generation ‘Atlas’ drive unit that’s claimed to implement everything Lucid has learned developing and producing the advanced Air limo and upcoming Gravity SUV.

The shadowy teaser shows a curvy streamlined body which is likely to see the model sit lower than its more conventional mid-sized SUV rivals.

A Model 3-rivalling sedan spin-off is also said to be in the works, however it’s unclear if it will arrive before or after the SUV – either way, both versions could spearhead Lucid’s Australian introduction as it continues its European expansion.

Despite previously announcing its intent to launch in the right-hand drive UK market, Lucid hasn’t revealed a timeline for the move, however it has confirmed it’s considering a third-party conversion program, potentially opening the door to Australia.

Local customers were invited to place down cash deposits of between $400-$1400 for the Air back in 2020 ahead of deliveries supposedly starting in 2022.

Those plans were then shelved to concentrate on production for the North American market.
