Luxury brands lend support to Box Hill TAFE

Students get up close to prestige performance cars as the press meets the year's top apprentice
Automotive students attending Box Hill TAFE took a break from the books on Thursday to cast their eyes over a brace of performance cars – the stuff of dreams for some of the apprentices studying there.
With coordinating support from motoring.com.au, a number of prestige importers and local builder HSV lent cars for a function that was part open day, part photo opportunity. A film crew from Channel 10 was on site also, interviewing 'Pre-Vocational Student of the Year', Sarah Maree Adams (pictured with Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet).
Located about 20km east of Melbourne, the Box Hill facility is currently training up to 250 apprentices – and it seemed like each and every one of them rolled up to see a BMW M6, HSV GTS, Infiniti FX50S, Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG and a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabrio. Also on hand was the competition-spec Renault Sport RS265 that entered this year's Targa Tasmania, with motoring's own Editor in Chief, Mike Sinclair at the helm. Mike and News Editor Ken Gratton attended the event to answer questions about the cars on display and take some of the students for a drive around the block.
Box Hill supplies hundreds of budding auto technicians to the industry each year, and intends to maintain that kind of commitment, despite recent funding cut-backs for TAFE institutions. Teachers at the institute, themselves with many years of practical spannering experience, took time out from their summer holidays to refurbish the workshops, saving money better spent on new tools and other equipment. Such dedication was only matched by the excitement of the students riding shotgun in some of Australia's most compelling performance cars.
