BMW is considering a new generation M3 CSL as a permanent fixture in the 'M Cars' range.
The German manufacturer acknowledges that the M3 CSL's lighter weight was a drawcard for buyers interested in an even more focused M3; with the emphasis on the 'weight' aspect of the 'power-to-weight' equation.
Built on the latest 'E92' 3 Series coupe platform, the standard M3 (pictured in red) has migrated from the six-cylinder powerplants of its forebears to V8 power (more here and here).
The V8 allows easier balance of the weight distribution and has been a 'fulcrum' for the whole M3 weight-saving program. Weight reduction was an idea arising out of the success of the lightweight E46 model, the M3 CSL, built during 2005.
Alistair Weaver, of American website 'Inside Line', recently interviewed Gerard Richter, Vice President of BMW, regarding -- among other things -- the providence for a new extra-light model of M3.
Mr Richter gave an unequivocal 'Maybe', when asked about such a car, but the success of the original M3 CSL (also pictured), must be a story begging for a sequel.
Mr Richter admitted "We built the last M3 CSL to test how many euros customers are willing to pay for less weight. For 20 years, they've learnt to pay for more power, not less weight."
But aren't those buyers also buying more exclusivity?
