BMW will build a sedan variant of the new M3. The just-announced E90 3 Series-based four-door joins the existing coupe variant launched earlier this year. The two-door officially goes on sale Down Under this week (more here) .
It's not the first time the Bavarian brand's go-fast crew has offered a four-door 3 Series special. A sedan version of the second-generation E36 M3 was sold in Europe (and selected markets) during the 1990s. It was never offered as an official model in Australia.
BMW Australia says it is "evaluating" the potential of adding the new sedan to its local line-up. It would be late 2008 or early 2009 before the variant would make it Down Under, sources say.
The running gear of the sedan matches the coupe with the same 309kW/400Nm 4.0-litre V8 at the pointy end. BMW claims the four-door M3 accelerates to 100km/h in 4.9sec and records average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 12.4lt/100km.
Look out for our local launch review of the M3 Coupe soon.
