The Mahindra Global Pik Up Concept has been fully unveiled in South Africa overnight, giving us our first look at the rugged Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux alternative that will go on sale in Australia in 2025.
Based on the latest Mahindra Scorpio SUV, which is Australia’s most affordable large diesel 4x4, the all-new dual-cab ute sits on the same ladder-frame chassis and is being developed under the Z121 codename.
As carsales has reported, the new Mahindra Global Pik Up is being partly developed in Australia, and although South Africa will be a key market, we expect production for Aussie-spec cars to be sourced from India.
Differing from the SUV, the Global Pik Up gets fresh front-end styling that includes a unique grille and revised bumper with vertical LED running lights and a pair of red tow hooks.
Other changes include a considerably longer wheelbase and, of course, the addition of the load bed.
Riding higher than the Scorpio, the Global Pik Up sports an unashamedly rugged look that also sees the concept come equipped with all-terrain tyres, side steps, a snorkel air intake and roof rack that incorporates an LED light bar.
In the bed there’s a sports bar and a pair of mounted spare wheels.
At the tailgate, the Global Pik Up gains new LED tail-lights and prominent MAHINDRA lettering, another bash plate and further recovery points.
Under the bonnet, the Global Pik Up will be powered by Mahindra’s new generation of all-aluminium mHawk turbo-diesel engines that will be combined with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.
It’s thought the Global Pik Up will get the same 2.2-litre four-cylinder as the Scorpio, pushing out 129kW/400Nm in the SUV, although that engine might be revised for the ute.
Like its rivals, the production Global Pik Up should be offered with low-range four-wheel drive and selectable driving modes – in this case, Normal, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts and Sand.
From launch, the Global Pik Up will get Level 2 semi-autonomous cruise control that includes auto parking. There will also be 5G connectivity and the same 7.0-inch touch-screen infotainment unit as found in the Scorpio.
The new ute will serve as the long-awaited replacement for the Mahindra Pik-Up that’s still on sale 18 years after it was first introduced.
It’s expected the production version of the Global Pik Up will be able to match rivals like the Ford Ranger with a 3500kg towing capacity and one-tonne payload.
