Is this the world's most affordable SUV? Priced at just under $10,000 when converted from the Indian rupee, the KUV100 features seating for up to six passengers, petrol or diesel engines and boasts what the Mahidra calls "aggressive styling" with a "dominant SUV stance".
The name KUV100 breaks from staid automotive naming convention and stands for Kool Utility Vehicle and likewise the unique styling is aimed at the "trendy" Indian youth market.
As well as featuring plenty of mod cons, such as Bluetooth connectivity, ISOFIX child safety seat anchorage points, and infotainment systems, the safety features wouldn't pass muster in some global markets, with dual front airbags optional on entry-level models. All models get anti-lock brakes, although low-tech drum brakes adorn the rear axle.
The micro SUV can be ordered as a five- or six-seat vehicle and the engine range comprises a pair of 1.2-litre engines. The petrol unit pumps out 61kW/115Nm while the turbo-diesel unit develops less power but more torque, 57kW/190Nm.
Although the Mahindra KUV100 might appear to be a rudimentary vehicle with a peculiar design, it's a signal that the domestic Indian automotive sector is now beginning to take a few risks. It remains to be seen whether the KUV100 risk will pay off for Mahindra, in a market where Suzuki and Hyundai rule with more conservative designs.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto was India's best-selling car in 2015, while Hyundai's much-hyped Creta SUV didn't make it into the Indian top 10 list last year.
Mahindra, with just one vehicle in the top 10 best-sellers list in India 2015 (Bolero), reckons the KUV100 is a "game-changer".
"The launch of KUV100 is a defining moment in the automotive journey of Mahindra. KUV100 is our first foray into ground up petrol engine and with it we are defining a new SUV sub-segment and targeting a new customer group," said Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra.
"We are entering a new orbit and hope to deliver yet another icon, yet another dream SUV."
