Mahindra Scorpio-N interior revealed

Mahindra’s Toyota Prado rival takes cabin sophistication for Indian brand to new heights

The interior of the 2022 Mahindra Scorpio-N has been uncovered as the Indian car-maker counts down to the full unveiling of its new-generation family SUV on June 27.

Revealed in a new 45-second YouTube video, the cabin of the new Mahindra Scorpio-N looks to be one of the most sophisticated we’ve seen from the Indian brand.

In the video, a high-series model of the Scorpio-N – described as the ‘Big Daddy of SUVs’ by Mahindra – is shown with sumptuous brown leather upholstery, a rotary gear selector, brushed aluminium-look trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, circa-8.0-inch infotainment interface with driver profiles, dual-zone climate control, a Sony surround sound system, analogue dials split by a wide TFT display and one-touch-release rear seats.

A sunroof can also be seen in previous promotional images, book-ended by silver roof rails which in turn complement the chrome grille and window trim.

Expected to be offered in Australia, but still to be officially confirmed by the company, the new Mahindra Scorpio-N is being touted as taking the fight up to large 4x4 family off-roaders such as the Toyota Prado, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero.

That said, its pricing and positioning is likely to align closely with the likes of the SsangYong Rexton and LDV D90, the latter currently starting below $40,000.

Underpinned by a new ladder-frame chassis and expected to be powered by a similar engine line-up to the Mahindra XUV700, the Scorpio-N will be available in both 4x2 and 4x4 configuration (like the D90) with the latter option also featuring a low-range transfer case.

A locking rear differential is yet to be confirmed, but the interior video reveals what looks to be off-road driving modes, so at the very least it’s likely the Mahindra will feature a self-locking differential like the one fitted to the Rexton.

Locking diffs have become a segment-standard feature in the ute-based large SUV class, with the Rexton being the only mainstream outlier.
