Make the most of Spring with these fun road trip ideas

Tired of the cold, gloomy weather and having nothing to do? Spring has sprung and with it comes some inspirational ways to spend the weekend.

It’s been a cold and dreary winter around Australia and for many, weekends were mainly spent inside to avoid the chilly weather and what felt like constant rain. With the worst of La Niña (hopefully) behind us, it’s time to get going and enjoy the most of this beautiful Spring weather. From a quick trip to Bunnings to a country drive to a tulip farm, here are five road trip ideas to make the most of Spring as the weather warms up.

Visit a flower farm

Many flower farms and events start to reopen in Spring. One of them is the hugely Instagrammable Tesselaar Tulip Festival in Victoria or Cowra Canola Tours, a few hours drive from Sydney. A quick Google search can find you local farms in your area where you can spend the day, or a weekend, basking in some glorious sun and looking out at a field of beauty.

With many of these flower farms located in rural towns, you’ll also be able to enjoy a short road trip to your destination through some of the most picturesque locations.

Ride the bike trails

Warmer weather has the power to motivate people to get outdoors. For many, myself included, bike riding is a hobby that often gets dismissed due to the weather (and my general struggle with sporting activities), but when the sun’s out there is a strong case to be made for a bike ride along a river.

For newer and perhaps more nervous riders, there are plenty of tracks located around Australia that offer scenic routes which only a short drive can get you to. It’s a great way to get active again and shed off some of that winter weight that may or may not have been caused directly by that new greek doughnut restaurant popping up on your UberEats in June.

Visit a Botanic Garden

As a child, I was weirdly obsessed with the Better Homes and Gardens television show and watched it religiously every Friday night. I listened intently as Graham Ross educated me on all the intricacies of how to care for your backyard plants and trees. These days I live in an apartment and my balcony is used as storage. Like me, luckily you don’t need to be a botanist to appreciate your local botanic gardens in Spring.

Exploring gardens around you and in its blooming season is as easy as packing a picnic, hopping in the car and setting yourself down near a pond somewhere. You get to enjoy all the scenery that people like Graham have cultivated for us.

Go plant shopping

Now if you’re like me and have a house that resembles a greenhouse conservatory then you won’t need the following excuse, but, Springtime is the perfect time to drive over to Bunnings or your local nursery and buy some new plants!

Get yourself a new Monstera or Devil's Ivy and with some water, fertiliser and love (arguably the most vital) you’ll have flourishing plants by the summer months.

It's a glorious time of year to be getting out and about and enjoying these warmer days. It’s the perfect opportunity to put your petal to the metal (sorry I had to) and get out in your car to enjoy a glorious spring day adventure!
