In the hectic world of car sales, photos are crucial – they do the talking before you even get a phone call.
Poor photos are the kiss of death for private sales on Australia’s number one automotive website, carsales, as buyers will scroll past poorly-framed and amateur-looking images faster than they swipe left on dating apps.
Well, help is here with carsales launching its new in-app guided photos feature, a free widget on the carsales app for private sellers that makes creating the perfect listing a whole lot easier – no matter your level of technical expertise.
The new iOS feature will essentially hold sellers' hands through the photography process, ensuring their listings don't look like evidence photos from a crime scene.
Sellers who click the guided photo option can engage a clever wireframe outline that helps them position the car to capture exactly what carsales’ significant internal data results in compelling photos.
We’re not allowed to publish the exact stats of how many ads are deemed ‘perfect’ but let’s just say it’s not many.
We've all seen them. Those car listings that look like they were photographed during a solar eclipse, only partially showing key car elements.
The latest in-built tools for private sellers is sort of like having a patient photography instructor whispering in your ear: "Step back. Can you see the whole car? Good. Now wipe that fingerprint off your lens."
The smart listing feature helps sellers to achieve an optimal listing with clear instructions that are easy to understand and follow.
What's refreshing is that carsales isn't treating this as a premium upsell opportunity. The feature comes included with all private sell packages at no extra charge, because better photos benefit everyone – sellers get more enquiries, buyers get better information, and carsales gets a platform that doesn't look like it's populated by people who've never seen a camera before.
With phone cameras now capable of producing stunning images, the only thing missing was guidance. Most people know their smartphone can take great photos; they just don't know how to point it at their Commodore.
Will this eliminate every wonky wheel shot? Probably not. But if it means fewer listings that look like abstract art projects, we're calling it a win.
The guided photography feature launches July 14, 2025 for iOS users across all private sell packages.
