Maserati announces 2+2 GranTurismo MC Stradale

Priced lower than two-seater, faster GranTurismo variant packs in two kiddy seats for 30kg penalty
The Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale that was developed as a two-seater for optimum weight and performance, can now be had in Australia as a 2+2.
European Automotive Imports, the local distributor for Maserati, has announced pricing for the 2+2 model first revealed in Geneva earlier this year. At $345,000 the new variant is nearly $20,000 cheaper than the two-place version.
Curiously, the reintroduction of vestigial seats in the rear has brought with it a 30kg penalty, but in the original transition from four to two, only 16kg was saved by removing the rear seat. The remaining 26kg saved came from adopting carbonfibre for the front seats. Admittedly, Maserati claims the new rear seating lacks for little in the way of luxury, offering leather and Alcantara upholsterly that's stitched together by hand, along with a centre armrest and cupholders. The new variant also comes with reading lights for the rear-seat occupants.
Despite the weight gain in the rear, Maserati has minimised its effect by specifying a carbonfibre bonnet. According to the manufacturer the 2+2 will polish off the 0-100km/h dash in the same time as the two-seater, 4.5 seconds. Furthermore, the new variant actually boasts a higher top speed of 303km/h – up from 301km/h.
The weight reduction from the GranTurismo Sport on which both Stradale models are based, is 110kg for the two-seater, 80kg for the 2+2 (1700kg kerb mass). Power and torque figures for the 4.7-litre V8 in this application amount to 338kW and 520Nm.
"The provision of two additional seats in the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale only serves to further highlight the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde characters of this remarkable car," says Glen Sealey, General Manager of Maserati Australia.
"On one hand this car is clearly the closest a road going GranTurismo can get in terms of performance, styling and sound in 'race mode', but select Auto on the dashboard and it transforms into a comfortable luxury coupe. It is a car that is as pleasurable to drive on a track day as driving to a night at the opera and, as such, is as much a benchmark for Maserati performance as it is for the company’s design and technology prowess."
Australia and New Zealand have been allocated just 20 units of the four-seat Stradale, and deliveries have already begun.
