It would have been easy for Maserati to tart up the 12-year-old first generation with a few modern bits and call it job done. But Modenese Italians don’t do things by halves. Despite looking familiar, this is an all-new GranTurismo. It uses a fresh, ground-up platform that has been built to house both internal combustion and EV drivetrains. The problem is all that work doesn’t come cheap – and neither does the GranTurismo. It’s packed with supercar-hunting pace and a level of luxury befitting a grand tourer, but which genre fits it best? And is the Trofeo worth more than $400K?

How much does the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo cost?

The old adage of ‘If you have to ask, you can’t afford it’ definitely applies to the 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo.

Pricing for the top-spec Trofeo variant is $427,500 before on-road costs (ORCs). That’s an increase of more than $100K on the model it directly replaces. And, after using the brand’s online price calculator with the test car’s optional extras, the figure verges on $500K when you include taxes and on-road costs.

Given the monetary equation it seems odd branding the Modena an ‘entry-level’ variant, but it will set you back $357,500 if the Trofeo isn’t to your liking. If you’re inclined to opt for a full EV, there’s also the Folgore.

The GranTurismo is covered by a three-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, but a 10-year extended plan is also available at an additional cost. Servicing intervals are short at 12 months or 10,000km (whichever comes first).

With a step up in value, the GranTurismo is now playing against high-end metal. Maserati would like you to believe that the GranTurismo is a Bentley Continental GT rival, yet that’s in another price bracket.

You’re more likely to cross-shop an Aston Martin DB12, Ferrari Roma, Mercedes-AMG GT or Porsche 911.

What equipment comes with the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo?

An evolutionary exterior design somewhat betrays the revolutionary underpinnings and cabin of the 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo. Although, many would argue that aesthetics was one area where the 12-year-old predecessor wasn’t showing its age.

The second generation continues the low-slung, long-bonnet style to create a sedately handsome silhouette. Clues to the performance lurking within centre around the bulging arches, quad exhaust pipes and staggered rolling stock – 20-inch alloys up front, and 21-inch items at the rear. The triple air vents flanking the front quarter panel are a nod to tradition, while twin intercoolers are visible either side of the front grille.

Standard kit is highlighted by full-grain leather upholstery, 18-way power adjustable front seats with memory, heating and ventilation, Alcantara roof lining, 3D carbon-fibre trim, dual-zone climate control, electronic boot release and keyless entry (Maserati E-Latch opening system) with push-button start.

Surprisingly, the test car is ‘relatively’ light-on for optional extras. It’s fitted with Gloss Yellow brake callipers ($1250), stitched Trident on the headrests ($1750) and the $7950 Tech Assistance Pack, which includes a digital rear-view mirror and head-up display.

We’d argue that those features should be standard for a car starting north of $400K, but as an example of how crazy it can get, ‘Fuoriserie’ metallic paint is an additional $40,000. Ouch. Although, the Nero Assoluto hue adorning our test car incurs no extra cost.

How safe is the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo?

As you might imagine, the local arm of the famous Italian brand isn’t too keen to hand over one of its prized possessions to ANCAP (or Euro NCAP) for crash testing. Hence, the 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo doesn’t carry a rating from the Australasian safety body.

Highlighting its safety package are six airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), active driving assist, radar cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, intelligent speed assist, traffic sign recognition, parking sensors and surround-view camera (one of which is in the shark fin on the roof).

What technology does the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo feature?

The four-seat coupe has gone from behind the times to bang up to date. The 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo employs a tech-driven cabin.

It’s centred around the latest Maserati Intelligent Assistant (or rather awkwardly, MIA), which uses an Android Auto-based operating system for the infotainment and is displayed on a large 12.3-inch touch-screen. It sits atop another 8.8-inch screen (with haptic feedback) that is used for all major controls, including climate.

Rounding out the screen-fest is the 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster with various themes. Actually, there’s one more. The customary Maserati timepiece has been digitised, but it also incorporates gizmos like a g-force metre.

Elsewhere there’s wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charge pad, native sat-nav, DAB+ digital radio, voice assistant and gesture control, Bluetooth, USB-A/USB-C ports and a 12-speaker Sonus Faber sound system.

What powers the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo?

Controversially, it’s no longer a V8. While the first generation delivered a truly memorable soundtrack, the 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Troffeo has succumbed to modern regulations and downsizing.

Hold your disappointed horses, though, because underneath the clamshell bonnet is a front-mid-ship-mounted version of the ‘Nettuno’ engine found in the MC20 supercar – complete with the trick pre-chamber combustion tech.

The 90-degree 3.0-litre V6 uses twin turbochargers and pumps out an impressive 404kW and 660Nm. Sticklers for details will notice that those figures are down on the MC20 due to the use of smaller turbos (it also features a wet sump over dry). However, the GranTurismo still rockets to 100km/h from rest in 3.5 seconds and will go on to a top speed of 320km/h. So, it doesn’t hang about.

It feels every bit that fast in reality, too. With all-wheel-drive traction and grippy Goodyear tyres, the Trofeo sinks its rubber into the tarmac and takes off with alarming alacrity. You can even time your launches using the track app within the infotainment.

ZF’s eight-speed torque-converter automatic doesn’t hamper progress. The transmission is now located behind the engine instead of the trans-axle arrangement of old and it delivers snappy shifts, which become more aggressive depending on the driving mode selected. Left to its own devices the transmission does tend to search for higher ratios too quickly, yet that can be mitigated by selecting gears manually via the exquisite column-mounted shifters.

The elephant in the room is the acoustics. It simply doesn’t sound like the old Ferrari-derived 4.7-litre V8. That’s not to say the 3.0-litre force-fed V6 is left wanting for aural theatre – far from it. The whip-crack explosions on full-throttle up-shifts are as addictive as they are loud and the V6 rises to a tuneful crescendo.

Not every note is a chart-topping hit, however. It struggles in the lower register with a slight gruffness and it falls melodically short when cruising at sedate speeds. Yet, this is a two-door coupe with a luxe bent, so the quieter side of the equation helps bring down the aggro tempo when required.

How fuel efficient is the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo?

Err, it isn’t… well, not really. Although, it largely depends on how you drive the 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo.

Tap into the long-legged GT vibe and, thanks to cylinder deactivation, the boosted V6 verges on achieving its official claimed consumption of 10.2L/100km. However, drive with the spirit of a flamboyant Italian and the Trofeo’s requirement for premium ULP soars.

During our week of testing with the GranTurismo Trofeo we clocked as much as 17.5L/100km. However, with a more varied mix of driving conditions that average came down to an overall figure of 13.5L/100km. How much someone worries about fuel consumption when buying a car in this league is debatable.

What is the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo like to drive?

You’d think the clue is in the name. However, with straight-line performance that would embarrass some supercars of the recent past, figuring out the 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo’s true persona isn’t that simple.

Other indicators of intent are found with the electronically actuated rear differential lock, the 265/30 R20 (front) and 295/30 R21 (rear) Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport tyres and the fact that up to 65 per cent of its architecture is lightweight aluminium. Then there are the driving modes that include the likes of Sport, Corsa and ESC-OFF.

Yet, the GranTurismo is a grand tourer, too. The Trofeo achieves this with double wishbone (front) and multi-link (rear) suspension tied in with single-chamber air springs and electronically controlled adaptive dampers. To tie in with the relaxed character, softened driving modes (Comfort and GT) are also selectable.

We’ve already tested the Trofeo at South Australia’s The Bend racetrack, but the big Maserati is more at home on the open road. Even with skinny rubber, the ride quality is supple and compliant in Comfort mode. It almost has a limo-esque waft to it, just with more control. Covering ground on a long-distance trip is pleasing.

In Sport or Corsa mode the Trofeo turns into a different animal. The dampers stiffen and the ride height lowers in Corsa. There’s truth to the mode branding as Sport is all you really need on-road, plus you can separate the suspension tune and tailor it to your liking.

With power going to both axles and the performance-focused tyres, there’s grip at both ends of the spectrum. The Trofeo is keen to turn in and it rotates nicely despite its almost five-metre length. Purchase past the apex is strong, but it can be playful, too, if you’re game enough to coax it along. It stops on a dime with Brembo brakes and changes of direction are swift – no doubt helped by the lighter-than-expected kerb weight of 1795kg.

The steering is ultra quick and it takes some getting used to. And while the responses are sharp, feedback through the wheel is left somewhat wanting. It’s a slight theme throughout the dynamic side of the driving experience. It’s hard not to be amazed by the Trofeo’s efficacy and talent, it’s just missing that final layer of driver involvement.

However, that shouldn’t take too much away from what is a compelling experience. The GranTurismo Trofeo is deeply pleasing to live with and drive.

What is the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo like inside?

Slide into the driver’s seat of the 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo and it immediately feels ‘right’. You sit low with legs forward, exactly what you want in a car with dynamic prowess.

While it’s roughly the same cabin you’ll find in the Grecale Trofeo, the interior metamorphosis is stunning. There’s a tech-laden focus that’s mixed in with myriad premium materials and pleasantly tactile surfaces. In terms of feel-good factor, it delivers.

Although, while there’s no doubt the GranTurismo Trofeo has a luxurious cabin, when you’re chasing Bentleys, using an interior that’s also found in a far cheaper SUV becomes a harder sell. The dash-mounted buttons for the gear selection can be trying at times, too.

Long doors make getting in and out when parked in tight spaces more difficult, but they do aid access to the rear pews. Once inside them there’s genuine space for adults. As far as 2+2 coupes go, the ‘plus two’ isn’t an afterthought.

There are even cup holders, map pockets, an air vent and USB ports in the back. Further aiding weekend getaway practicality is the 310-litre boot and ski port, although you’ll have to be content with a can of goo if you’re unlucky enough to get a flat tyre.

Should I buy a Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo?

You could opt for the lesser-powered Modena and be perfectly happy. However, if you’re paying to play at this end of the market, the step up to the rapid 2025 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo is likely to be a no brainer.

The more difficult justification comes when comparing the Maserati to other marques and whether the trident stands quite as tall. In this ballpark you could feasibly opt for a famed prancing horse.

So, is the GranTurismo Trofeo a grand tourer trying to be a supercar, or a supercar trying to be a grand tourer? The answer lies somewhere in the middle. It’s a luxurious GT-car at heart, with a firecracker of an engine. And for those fortunate enough to enjoy the means and live with a penchant for la dolce vita, it’s a compelling proposition.

Pros
  • Intoxicating levels of performance from the twin-turbo V6
  • Impressive refinement and ride quality thanks to adaptive air suspension
  • Visual impact is high with the benefit of being a useable four-seat coupe
Cons
  • The price is eye-wateringly high – as are some of the options
  • While the V6 soundtrack is pleasing, it doesn’t match the V8
  • Interior doesn’t differentiate itself enough from the Grecale Trofeo
