Maserati MC20 already sold out

Waiting list for all-new mid-engined Italian supercar already out to late 2022

Just hours after its official world debut last night and within a day of it being unceremoniously leaked across the internet yesterday comes news that the stunning Maserati MC20 is already sold out in Australia.

Maserati Australia this morning confirmed to carsales that the Italian brand’s first two-seat supercar since the Ferrari Enzo-derived 2005 Maserati MC12 limited-edition will arrive Down Under in the second half of 2021.

Sadly for some, however, it also said: “Australian production slots [are] all spoken for well beyond our first-year allocation”.

This is despite the fact Australian pricing and specs are yet to be confirmed, and that the mid-engined, butterfly-doored Maserati MC20 will be priced well over $250,000, in line with direct competitors like the $485K Ferrari F8 Tributo and Lamborghini Huracan (from $378,900).

The other big news to emerge overnight is official confirmation of convertible and all-electric EV versions of the Maserati MC20, following production of the coupe you see here at the Viale Ciro Menotti factory by the end of this year.

Otherwise most of the specs released yesterday were on or close to the mark (see the official spec sheet below), meaning the rear-wheel drive MC20 will be powered by a new Maserati-designed ‘Nettuno’ 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6.

The oversquare 90-degree dry-sump V6 with Maserati Twin Combustion (MTC) tech will produce 630hp (470kW) at 7500rpm and 630Nm of torque over 3000-5500rpm.

Combined with a kerb weight of less than 1500kg, that’s enough for Maserati to claim a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than 2.9 seconds, 0-200km/h pace in under 8.8sec and a top speed of more than 325km/h.

Driving through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a mechanical limited-slip differential (an electronic rear diff will be optional), combined WLTP fuel consumption is listed at 11.6L/100km.

Maserati hasn’t detailed the supercar’s future electric powertrain, but claims the MC20 EV will hit 100km/h in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 310km/h, while offering a driving range of up to 323km (WLTP).

The Maserati’s MC20’s suspension is via double wishbones at both ends (a front-end lift system will be optional) and braking via 380x34mm vented front and 350x27mm rear discs clamped by six- and four-piston callipers respectively.

The claimed braking distance is quoted at less than 33 metres and a carbon-ceramic brake option will be optional, comprising 390x36mm front and 360x28mm rear rotors.

Wheels are 20-inch at all four corners, wrapped in 245/35 front and 305/30 ZR 20 rubber.

Riding on a 2700mm wheelbase as short as a Toyota Corolla’s, the Maserati MC20 measures just 4669mm long and only 1221mm high, but a broad 1965mm wide.

The mid-engined coupe will offer a total 150 of luggage space – 50 litres up front and 100 at the rear.

Inside the racy two-seat cabin, the 8DCT is controlled by push-buttons on the centre console, which also houses a drive mode selector.

A large 10.0-inch free-standing tablet-style infotainment screen in the centre-piece of the dashboard and there’s a matching 10.0-inch digital instrument cluster.

Online connectivity functions will include connected navigation, the Alexa smart assistant, Wifi Hotspot and the ability to manage some vehicle systems via through the Maserati Connect smartphone or smartwatch app.

The Maserati MC20 will be available with six dedicated new paint colours: Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma and Grigio Mistero.
