Maserati has set the date for the world debut of its first electrified model, the 2020 Maserati Ghibli Hybrid.
Now confirmed for its global digital premiere next Thursday (July 16), the petrol-electric large luxury sedan will be the Italian car-maker’s first dabble in the world of electrification, ahead of the fully-electric models it plans to launch down the track, including the all-new Maserati MC20 supercar.
We’ve already seen snippets of the Maserati Ghibli Hybrid in a teaser video released last month, when the famous trident brand said: “Innovation has always been a muse for Maserati’s engineers and designers: it all starts with a spark – a flash of brilliance that catches, that burns, that grows.
“From this same inspiration comes the all new Ghibli Hybrid: the first in a line of new vehicles at the vanguard of a new era for Maserati,” said the company in a press release.
At this stage, there’s no confirmation of what Maserati’s first hybrid powertrain will entail, but it won’t be based on the company’s soon-to-be-axed Ferrari-sourced V8 and is unlikely to include plug-in capability.
That means it will be either a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 or a fuel-sipping four-cylinder petrol engine, equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid tech.
Maserati’s first hybrid model will also be equipped with advanced Level 2 autonomous driving aids, which are also due to appear as part of upcoming facelifts for the Levante SUV and Quattroporte limousine.
The Maserati Ghibli Hybrid will be unveiled online at 1:00pm CET (9:00pm AEST) July 16. You can watch it live here here and then come back to carsales for full details.
