Mattel creates 3000-piece Tesla Cybertruck model

US toy-maker's Lego alternative take on Cybertruck features cheeky pre-cracked windows

Mattel Creations has announced it has teamed up with US car-maker Tesla to create a model based on its Tesla Cybertruck concept made entirely out of its MEGA CONSTRUX bricks.

Said to consist of more than 3000 pieces, the new model is claimed to stay as faithful to the original pure-electric pick-up as possible.

That explains why the latest Lego rival creation gets adjustable suspension to raise or lower its ride height, a functional tonneau cover that pops on and off, a folding tailgate that slides into the truck frame out of sight and, not least of all, pre-cracked side glass.

Following on from the 1:10 scaled Mattel Hot Wheels RC Cybertruck, in the US the latest MEGA Tesla Cybertruck is set to be priced from $US250 ($A340) when it goes on sale on October 15.

Commenting on the new creation, the MEGA Cybertruck creators said: "It is a one-of-a-kind building experience that culminates in an iconic, display-worthy model of the new Cybertruck that only MEGA can give you.

"Inspired by the original designs from Tesla’s upcoming release, we created a MEGA X Cybertruck you can build brick by brick and customise to reveal different hidden features that can only be discovered while you build it."

As reported, the Cybertruck, which will have to be radically redesigned for production, is not expected to arrive in Australia until 2025, following multiple delays.

With production not set to begin until late 2022 with volume manufacturing to follow in 2023, Tesla has already received more than one million pre-orders for the Cybertruck.

Set to be built at the company’s ‘Gigafactory’ in Austin, Texas, the Cybertruck’s initial late-2021 production target was blown out to 2022 due to the global semi-conductor shortage affecting a huge number of global industries.

The Tesla Cybertruck was revealed in 2019 and made headlines not only for its wild design and monstrous power output, but also its shatter-proof windows – which unfortunately shattered when a metal ball was thrown at one (to demonstrate the tech) at the unveiling.

Dense 200kWh lithium-ion battery packs are expected to be made available for the Cybertruck, which should provide a cruising range of more than 800km, Tesla claims.

Australian buyers can pre-order the vehicle via the official Tesla website with a $150 refundable deposit, with single-, double- and triple-motor variants all on the menu. They will then be able to configure their vehicle “as production nears in 2022”, according to information currently on the site.

Top-spec triple-motor Cybertruck models are claimed to accelerate from 0-60mph (97km/h) in less than 3.0 seconds, with a top speed of over 200km/h.

All Tesla Cybertruck models have a payload of 1588kg and the base model is rated to tow 3402kg, while triple-motor versions will have a towing capacity of at least 6350kg.
