Maxi Caddy arrives Down Under

Some people are impressed by stretch limos... VW has launched a stretched Caddy with a difference

It's a stretch Caddy, Jim -- but not as we know it... Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced the launch of its latest model Down Under -- the new Caddy Maxi Van.

Effectively a Caddy light commercial with a 470mm stretch, the new Maxi is priced from $24,740. Says VW, it is aimed at "tradesmen, courier services and service providers requiring a very high load capacity in a compact van".

Volkswagen claims the new LCV defines "a new class of vehicle".

The Caddy Maxi's 'stretch' is the result of adding 320mm to the existing model's wheelbase (2682-3002mm) and extending the rear overhang by 150mm. The new vehicle is 4.88m long overall -- around 100mm longer than a Passat wagon.

VW says the interior volume of the Caddy Maxi Van has increased almost by a third from 3200-4200 litres -- check out our pre-configured Carsales Network Caddy Comparator here -- making it "one of the largest models among the compact vans and small transporters".

Payload has increased from 730 to 813kg and loads of up to 2250mm long can be accommodated, depending on the interior configuration. The maximum roof load is 100kg, says VW, and depending on the powertrain, the Caddy Maxi Van boasts a braked towing capacity of 1500kg.

Three powerplants are offered: a five-speed manual 75kW/148Nm 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol and five-speed manual and six-speed DSG-equipped 77kW/ 250Nm 1.9-litre turbodiesel models.

The manual TDI model is the most frugal, returning a combined economy stat of 6.1L/100km in government testing.

The TDI models get a slightly higher level of equipment (including cruise control), however, even the petrol gets its share of goodies. All Caddy Maxis feature: cloth-trimmed buckets, dual sliding side doors; driver and front passenger airbags; 'semi-automatic' aircon; height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats; heat reflective glass and over-windscreen storage 'gallery'.

Antilock brakes, traction control and EBC (engine braking control) are all standard. Stability control, including brake assist system and trailer stabilisation (when a towbar is ordered), is an option on all models.

Caddy Maxi Van pricing
1.6-litre petrol (five-speed manual) -  $24,740
1.9-litre turbodiesel (five-speed manual) -  $28,740
1.9-litre turbodiesel (six-speed DSG) -  $31,740
