Mazda announces BT-50 Boss flagship

New audio system and black treatment for Mazda’s freshly-anointed range-topper

Mazda has announced price and specification details for a new flagship within its utility range, the BT-50 Boss.

Available in showrooms from this month, the Mazda BT-50 Boss is priced from $55,990 drive away, bringing a $4000 premium over the GT model on which it is based.

Changes extend to a new eight-speaker Alpine audio system that includes independent a-pillar tweeters, and a host of black gloss accessories: 17-inch wheels and blacked-out grille, door handles, mirror caps, sports bar and side steps.

Oh, there’s also a ‘BOSS’ stripe proudly adorning each side of the dual-cab, finished exclusively in Snowflake White Pearl Mica paint.

Those features are over and above the regular GT specification, which means the Boss scores black leather seats, privacy glass, electrically-adjustable front seats, central-locking tailgate, a tub liner, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and power mirrors as standard.

Power is drawn from a familiar 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo diesel good for 147kW and 470Nm, with the sole transmission choice of a six-speed automatic sending drive to all four wheels.

The current generation BT-50 shares its basic underpinnings with the Ford Ranger, but is set to be superseded by a new model in 2021 that will share its architecture with the next Isuzu D-Max ute.

The design and launch strategy of the replacement is already locked in, according to Mazda, with speculation pointing towards a tougher new look over the current car’s ‘smiley face’ styling treatment.

As Isuzu and Mazda hop into bed for ute development, Ford and Volkswagen are also getting cozy with the next Ranger and Amarok being co-developed in Melbourne on the same Australian-designed T7 ladder platform.
