One of Mazda's many Frankfurt motor show vehicles, the MX-5 Superlight Concept design takes the classic drop-top in a new direction.
Created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MX-5 (aka Miata), the race-inspired concept is a rear-wheel drive vehicle that shows what can be achieved with the iconic roadster's platform.
Hinting at a new low weight model for the future, the concept has a simple but appealing design.
The MX-5 Superlight Concept chops the top, adds a stylised centre-mount rear-view mirror, removes the windscreen and adds twin buttress sections behind the passenger's heads, creating a sporty new look.
Based on the standard MX-5 and using similar body sections, the Superlight Concept makes use of slightly altered versions of the MX-5's headlights and front and rear end designs.
The result is a neat little speedster that could have the makings of a limited-run classic, if Mazda decides to do more than just shop it around at motor shows.
The Mazda MX-5 convertible used to be a top seller but with more and more competition coming from afforable convertibles in recent years, the vehicle's market share has faded somewhat.
With the number plate "LEV MX-5", the new model is a low emissions vehicle and leaked reports suggest that the concept car's power comes from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine outputting 92kW. Combined with an ultra-light kerb weight of 995kg thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre and a stripped-out interior (an iPod dock is retained however), the Superlight Concept will use very little fuel.
It also manages to achieve an 8.9sec zero to 100km/h acceleration time and is equipped with four-point racing harnesses should the G-forces become too intense.
While Mazda's MX-5 Superlight Concept may not be the fastest concept car that 2009 Frankfurt motor show, it could be one of the most efficient.
