Mazda2: FAQs

The Mazda2 is proof that small affordable cars don’t need to be boring. Here are the Mazda2 FAQs you asked online

Is the Mazda2 a reliable car?

Through three generations, the Mazda2 has established itself as a reliable, high-quality small car.

The replacement for the Mazda 121, the Mazda2 first appeared in Australia in 2002 as a boxy five-door and then evolved into a sleeker shape for generation two in 2007 and generation three in 2014.

A key asset of the Mazda2 is its relative mechanical simplicity and high build quality (some Mazda2s came from Japan, some from Thailand). Those two factors add up to a higher percentage chance of reliability than many rival models.

One member of the carsales team has bought two second-generation Mazda2s for his daughters and has been very pleased with their reliability.

Does Mazda2 have a timing belt or chain?

The 2002-2007 Mazda2 used the 1.5-litre Mazda ZY-VE four-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine with a timing chain. The second-generation Mazda2 launched in 2007 used the same engine.

A new-generation SKYACTIV-G 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine arrived with the third generation in 2014 and it also employed a timing chain.
