Mazda3 MPS arrives

As one of the powerful hot hatches of its era, the first generation Mazda3 MPS (more here) was the perfect halo car for one of Mazda most successful models, the Mazda3.

After 30,000 sales worldwide, Mazda has launched the new generation MPS Down Under, sporting a contemporary and dynamic new look that includes 'that' bonnet scoop.

There are two models in the range, the Mazda3 MPS at $39,690 and the Mazda3 MPS Luxury, which fetches $43,290. The Japanese car maker expects to sell around 70 of the hot hatches per month in Australia.

Making use of the same 2.3-litre engine that powered the original Mazda3 MPS that was introduced in 2006, the new model outputs 190kW/380Nm and uses an update 6-speed manual transmission. Mazda does not offer the 3MPS with an automatic gearbox.

Some of the standard features on the $39,690 Mazda3 MPS include dynamic stability control, six airbags, Bluetooth phone connectivity, built-in satellite navigation with a 4.1 colour screen, dual zone climate control, bolstered sports seats with eight-way electrically adjustable driver's seat, 6-stack CD/MP3 stereo with AUX input, smart keyless entry and engine start, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED brake lights and an aerodynamic body kit.

Mazda predicts that around 60 per cent of buyers will opt for the $43,290 Luxury model, which adds an auto dimming rear view mirror, xenon headlights hooked up to an adaptive front lighting system (AFS), rain sensing windscreen wipers and a beefed up Bose audio system with 10 speakers and a subby.
