It was a tough year in 2009. Even Mazda suffered a setback in sales for the year, but the company's global head of marketing, sales and customer service, Masazumi Wakayama, has acknowledged the local arm's stronger result in recent months, reflected in the balance sheet.
"Despite the very tough environment, Mazda Australia achieved an all-time record in sales and market share in the Japanese fiscal year just ended," Wakayama-san told local journalists last week.
The Mazda executive was full of praise for the local management team and the Australian dealer network. In fact, the regard shared by dealers and the local office was one noteworthy aspect of his trip Down Under.
"What impresses me most is that dealers and Mazda Australia have a mutual trusting relationship, a very strong relationship," he said through an interpreter.
He praised Mazda Australia too for the way the locals had handled the brand image.
"We want customers to see us with a better value... and instead of placing importance on price, we want customers to choose us because of our brand and product," his interpreter said, but his following remarks were made directly to the journalists and in English: "Australia is ahead of the rest, in that sense."
