McLaren 570S replacement to be plug-in hybrid

Fresh details of the all-new hybrid-powered Sport Series McLaren have surfaced ahead of its reveal in just a few months' time.

Set to tap into the know-how accrued when developing both the P1 and Speedtail hypercar, the replacement for the 570S is expected to produce more power and significantly more torque to offset the extra weight introduced by adding a battery and electric motor.

As such, expect the 570S to produce more than the current car's 419kW and 600Nm and for it to hit 100km/h in less than the 3.2 seconds..

The main advantage of the switch to plug-in powertrain will be its ability to cover up to 20 miles (32km) on pure-electric energy alone, while being more fuel efficient than the outgoing model, which has an official 10.7L/100km claim.

It's thought McLaren will resist the urge of switching to all-wheel drive on purist grounds and for the replacement for the 570S to remain rear-drive.

To save weight, the electric motor is expected to be incorporated within the next 570S' dual-clutch transmission casing.

Speaking to the Brit mag about the next Sport Series McLaren, the car-maker's CEO Mike Flewitt said: "McLaren is all about building the best driver’s cars, and we see opportunities with hybrid [powertrains], in terms of the instant torque and filling the gaps in the powerband.

“Hybridisation could play a key role in the journey [to net zero emissions], and I believe that a longer transition period of running hybrids and full EVs alongside each other could be part of the answer. We’ve invested in this technology with the goal of paying back that investment over a number of years."

Following its planned reveal in the European summer, deliveries of the new hybrid model are set to begin before the end of the year.
