McLaren only recently debuted the new 650S, but already the Brit sports car specialist has unleashed a special edition version that will make its first public appearance at this weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Known as the MSO 650S Spider, the newbie will feature in the Supercar Paddock and take part in the iconic hillclimb that's the centrepiece of the Festival, staged on the estate of Lord March.
The limited-edition vehicle is already available to order, with deliveries starting before the end of the year. Exclusivity is guaranteed as McLaren will build and sell only 50 units, commanding a premium of just under 30 per cent over the regular 650S Spider.
In case you're wondering about the MSO prefix, it's short for McLaren Special Operations, a division that was launched in 2011 to offer McLaren's customers the type of personalisation services that Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and the like also extend to their clients.
The dedicated division grew out of McLaren's Customer Care programme, which goes back 20 years to the era of the iconic McLaren F1, and continues to look after servicing and maintaining F1s for owners, as well as undertaking personalisation work for all McLaren models.
As evident from the accompanying images, the MSO 650S isn't dramatically different to the standard car, but trainspotters will have picked up on the carbon-fibre styling upgrades with their satin finish.
Bits unique to the MSO include extended side blades, while the three-piece rear bumper includes a carbon-fibre centre section, and sits above a more aggressive rear diffuser.
Helping it stand apart from the bogger, the MSO 650S is available in a choice of three special colours, each of which has a heavy metallic content.
'Papaya Spark' is a modern take on the traditional McLaren Orange, and it's joined by 'Agrigan Black' and 'Sarigan Quartz'.
'Agrigan Black' is a metallic black with a deep ruby red metallic flake, while 'Sarigan Quartz' (shown here) is a new colour for MSO, being shown for the first time at Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Other visual clues to the MSO's identity include Palladium coloured 10-spoke Super Lightweight alloy wheels, with a diamond cut effect to the inside edge of each spoke.
McLaren says these wheels save 4 kg over the standard hoops, and are held in place by lightweight titanium wheel bolts.
The cabin has also been upgraded via carbon black leather and Alcantara, contrasting with satin lacquered carbonfibre highlights splashed throughout the cabin. There's also gloss finish on the air vents and handling and powertrain switchgear on the Active Dynamics Panel.
Just to ram home its limited-edition status, each car comes with a signature plaque mounted on the MSO-branded carbon-fibre sill panel.
Each buyer also receives a Frank Stephenson-signed sketch and a luxury MSO branded, leather holdall that's crafted from black carbon-fibre leather and is fitted with carbon black handles.
