We’ve seen a variety of unofficial renders since McLaren confirmed last year that it’s studying the case to build an SUV, following rival supercar brands such as Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari.
And this new one has caught our attention, with graphic designer Nikita Chuiko presenting a plausible take on how a high-rider from the Woking-based marque might look.
New McLaren boss Michael Leiters has made it clear that the controversial model would have to be in line with the British supercar brand’s identity and DNA, and not “a classic SUV”.
To that end, Chuiko has mocked up a Porsche Macan-sized crossover with design cues from the McLaren Artura, including its metallic green hero colour.
The front fascia is a direct lift and stretch transplant from the Artura in almost every detail, with the thin LED headlights, air dams and carbon-fibre aero bumper all near-identical, the latter stretched vertically and featuring taller peaks.
It’s a similar story at the rear where the signature slimline tail-lights and huge carbon-fibre rear diffuser are found.
The obvious exception is the lack of exhaust outlets, given the McLaren SUV is widely anticipated to feature a twin-motor or even tri-motor battery-electric powertrain.
This fact alone makes it an immediate rival to the Lotus Eletre as opposed to the Lamborghini Urus or Aston Martin DBX707, which are both powered by force-fed V8s.
It looks as if the Aston Martin has been used as the basis of these latest renderings, judging by the body shape from the front pillar to the rear, plus the flowing trapezoidal shape of the rear diffuser.
The upcoming Porsche Macan EV might also stand a possible rival depending on how big McLaren decides to make its first SUV, although it’s unlikely the zero-emissions Macan will attract a circa-$600K price tag like we expect for the McLaren, should it get the green light.
