McLaren teases F1 replacement

Sold-out three-seat 'hyper-GT' to be based on new chassis, have more power than a P1 and cost owners $3.3 million

McLaren has released a new teasing picture of its spiritual successor to the 1994 F1, that promises to have more power than a P1 when it arrives in 2019.

The new three-seater flagship McLaren, codenamed BP23, will be the latest member of the car maker's 'Ultimate Series' - and sit above the P1 made between 2013-2015.

Instead of a direct hypercar-replacement for the P1, the British car maker says the BP23 is a new category of performance car labelled the 'hyper GT', that blends the comfort of a grand tourer with the speed of a hypercar, making the new McLaren a close rival to Bugatti's recently launched Chiron.

Like the P1, the BP23 will be powered by an advanced hybrid powertrain that, in the hyper GT's case, is expected to combine a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 with up to three electric motors.

Together, and thanks to a powerful lithium ion battery pack, the hybrid V8 will produce far more than the 674kW the P1 produced, with a figure expected to eclipse 750kW.

As well as the state-of-the-art hybrid engine, the BP23 will be based on a new carbon-fibre structure.

Far wider than a McLaren 720S because of the need to package the three-abreast seating, it’s thought the BP23 structure will be development of the Super Series’ carbon-fibre Monocage II.

Like the F1, the BP23 places the driver's seat centrally ahead of the two passengers, but unlike the original McLaren road car, access for the driver will be far easier the car maker claims.

Just 106 BP23s will be made. All are sold, McLaren claims with the price tag thought to exceed £2 million ($3.3 million).
