McLaren teases ultimate track-focused P15

British supercar maker begins countdown to its most extreme model yet

McLaren has teased a darkened rear-view image of what's claimed to be its most "extreme road-legal" car yet.

The two images released overnight preview a car known internally at McLaren HQ in Woking, Surrey as the 'P15'.

Created to replace the P1 hypercar, the P15 will be the third car (after the P1 GTR) in McLaren's 'Ultimate Series'.

Set to arrive before the three-seat B23 (which will also sit above the Super Series 720S in the Ultimate Series), the P15 is exclusively a two-seater.

Based on the same Monocage II one-piece carbon-fibre tub as the 720S, the P15 is thought to forgo all luxuries to achieve an ultra-lightweight kerb weight of around 1200-1300kg.

McLaren will reveal the P15 on December 10, ahead of its official launch next March at the Geneva motor show. Expect propulsion to come from an even more powerful version of the M840T twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8.

In the 720S, the V8 produces 537kW/770Nm, but in the P15 it's thought power will top 600kW.

Unknown at this time is whether the P15 will come with McLaren's next-generation hybrid powertrain -- which would add weight -- or extract the extra power via larger turbochargers.

To cope with the extra performance, the P15 will come with an advanced aerodynamics package -- beyond anything fitted to McLaren road car -- thought to have been lifted from the F1 racing program.

If the P15 does without a hybrid powertrain, it's likely the B23 hypercar will introduce the next chapter of electrified V8 for McLaren.

It's rumoured the P15 will match not only the P1 production figure of 375 cars, but also its price tag of around £850,000 ($A1.5 million).

More teases are expected in coming weeks.
