Melbourne’s Chapel Street now the world’s largest drive-thru

Why should Maccas have all the fun? Melbournians can now order and drive-thru the famed shopping and dining strip to pick up their meals.

With most of the nation’s cars off the road and parking spots galore, many shopping and dining strips across the country are struggling as COVID-19 continues. In times like this, creative ways of doing business is at the forefront with Melbourne’s Chapel Street creating what they say is the ‘World’s Largest Drive-Thru’. Café and restaurant owners are encouraging locals to order directly and drive up to the front door to pick up their orders. Cutting out the food delivery commission fee of 35% so more money can flow through to Australian hospitality workers and businesses in the area can stay open.

With the strip renowned for locals in hotted up Commodores and super cars ‘chucking Chap laps’ now quiet and with parking a-plenty, locals are encouraged to embrace the drive-thru life, including what could possibly be a new trend, In Car Dining.

General Manager of Chapel Street Precinct Association, Chrissie Maus said at the launch of the Chap-Drive-Thu campaign that they’re hoping all Melburnians call and collect to support local business.

“By ordering directly – more money will flow through to the restaurants and local employees, rather than being gobbled up by foreign owned delivery apps like UberEats and Deliveroo. The campaign highlights how our businesses are getting savvy with their takeaway offerings while also showing the creative ways to collect your food! I’m quite excited by the idea of Melburnians embracing In Car Dining.
