Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe teased one last time

Most ferocious ever C-Class teased for a final time ahead of full reveal

OK so we've seen it in leaked shots, an official teaser video and a series of authorised and unauthorised spy shots.

Now, for those who haven't had enough of its extended strip-tease, Mercedes has released one last teaser image of the new AMG C 63 Coupe ahead of its global online reveal later this week.

Due to make its world public premiere at next month's Frankfurt motor show before arriving in Australia at the head of the new C-Class Coupe range in mid-2016, the 2016 C 63 S Coupe promises to be the most formidable C-Class ever.

Compared to mainstream versions of the new C-Class two-door unveiled last week, the showroom-ready C 63 S Coupe teased here adds exactly what you'd expect: a more aggressive aero kit including an aggressive front bumper with black honeycomb upper and lower grilles.

As evidenced by this week's leaked shots the S version of the C 63 Coupe also features a prominent rear diffuser flanked by quad exhaust outlets, plus chunky side skirts, a subtle bootlid spoiler and large alloy wheels.

Like the C 63 sedan, the coupe should be available with ceramic brakes and an exterior carbon-fibre package, and should also be offered in launch-special Edition 1 guise

Also using the C 63 sedan as a guide, the C 63 Coupe should come with AMG attractions like a flat-bottom steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles, AMG-specific instrument cluster with lap timer and turbo boost gauge, the choice of three Nappa leather colours, metallic paint, panoramic sunroof, LED headlights with adaptive high-beam, head-up display.

To this the S adds items like a 360-degree camera, digital TV tuner, Burmester 590-Watt 13-speaker surround sound and heated memory front seats.

However, the C-Class Coupe's biggest visual difference to the sedan will be a sportier interior to match its sleek two-door exterior, housing coupe-specific seats with an automatic seatbelt feeder.

Of course, the headline act of the C 63 S Coupe (the only AMG version of the coupe likely to be available in Australia from launch, as with the sedan) is a 375kW/700Nm version of AMG's twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, which eclipses the standard C 63's 350kW/650Nm outputs.

Matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission and driving the rear wheels, the ultimate C-Class should hit 100km/h in as little as 3.9 seconds, given the C 63 S sedan does it in four seconds.

That's because the svelte new C-Class coupe should be slightly lighter than the sedan, which weighs 1655kg in C 63 S form (and 1725kg as a wagon).

Official kerb weights are yet to be revealed but Mercedes says the new C Coupe is stiffer yet lighter than before due to a higher proportion of aluminium than ever — including the front guards, the bonnet and the bootlid – which should make it the most dynamic C-Class ever.

Although top speed will be electronically limited to 250km/h, the AMG coupe will also be slipperier than the sedan, given Benz is claiming a 0.26 Cd drag coefficient for the mainstream C-Class Coupe, which helps it reduce fuel consumption by an average of no less than 20 per cent.

Either way the sexy new C 63 Coupe will be half a second quicker to 100km/h than its predecessor, and quicker than the M4 Coupe, which packs a 317kW/550Nm twin-turbo six and hits 100km/h in a claimed 4.1 seconds in dual-clutch auto guise, although there's a hotter M4 GTS to come.

The newest AMG will come with all of the advances seen in the new C-Class Coupe, including an 80mm longer wheelbase, 95mm more overall length, 40mm more width and more head, shoulder and elbow room for all passengers.

Air springs will be an option for the standard suspension set-up, which is AMG-tuned across the range and comprises a four-link spring/strut arrangement at the front and a five-link independent rear-end, all of which rides 15mm lower even for mainstream two-door models.

Offered alongside wheel sizes of up to 20-inch, the continuously variable, electronically controlled Airmatic air suspension system offers five driving modes ranging from Eco to Comfort to Sport to Sport+ and to the customisable Individual mode.

As we've reported, garden-variety C-Class Coupe models will include the petrol-powered 180kW C 300, 155kW C 250 and 135kW C 200 – all powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder – plus the 115kW 1.6-litre turbo-petrol C 180 and the 2.2-litre diesel-powered 125kW C 220d and 150kW 250d.

Expect the C 63 S Coupe to be joined here by just one other high-output petrol model – perhaps the C 250 Coupe.
