While the glitz and glamour of the 2020 Geneva motor show was snuffed out by the coronavirus, it didn't stop AMG unleashing its latest four-wheeled weapon, the E 53.
Based on the just-revealed facelifted E-Class, the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 is powered by the same 320kW/520Nm 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six-cylinder engine as its predecessor.
It features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system as before, and can pump in an extra 16kW/250Nm to boost performance.
Coupled to an AMG speedshift TCT nine-speed automatic transmission pumping through an all-wheel drive system, the car has a top speed of 270km/h and accelerates to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds.
Once again bigger brakes are fitted to ensure deceleration matches acceleration, with four-piston front callipers working 370mm discs and single-piston callipers for the 360mm rear rotors.
The 2020 Mercedes-AMG E 53, which consumes 8.7L/100km, will also benefit from the upgrades applied to the facelifted E-Class, such as improved semi-autonomous driver aids and vehicle protection systems.
With a sports body kit on the outside and loads of AMG kit in the cabin, including a new AMG Performance steering wheel and two-tone grey-pearl nappa leather with red stitching, the new model is expected to come to Australia in early 2021.
