If you want proof the Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate can get you home from the grocery shopping before the ice cream melts, look no further.
Mercedes' hotrod division says it has set a new wagon record around Germany’s famed Nurburgring Nordscheliefe, claiming a blistering 7:45.19 lap.
The feat was achieved with German car magazine journalist Christian Gebhardt behind the wheel, outpacing the previous 7:58 benchmark set by the Seat Leon ST Cupra 280 wagon.
The E63 Estate, which isn’t sold in Australia, employs the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 as its sedan sibling. The car’s top speed is governed at 290km/h, while nought to 100 takes a claimed 3.4 seconds in the latest 2018 model.
The E63’s time around the 20.8km circuit falls well short of the outright 6:47.25 post held by the manic Porsche 911 GT2 RS, but importantly, it is still faster than the benchmark SUV, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (7:51.07).
Balance has been restored, you could say.
