After snow-bound spy pics emerged earlier this year, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4² has finally broken cover, brandishing more V8 power than before, heavily upgraded chassis components and plenty of carbon bling.
The third vehicle in the German car-maker’s low-volume but highly appealing dirt devil range, the G 63 4x4² follows in the tyre treads of the insane Mercedes-Benz G 63 6x6 and G 500 4x4², and is dubbed by the company as ‘the most G Class ever’.
It’s also made clear that the Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4² is “the last of its kind”, with Benz suggesting the vehicle’s successor will be based on the EQG electric SUV and bring high-torque e-motors to bear.
Most Mercedes-AMG G 63 models can be seen in their natural habitat cruising inner-city boulevards, but the G 63 4x4² is designed for more challenging terrain, fitted with portal axles that deliver an increase in ground clearance to 351mm and a water fording depth of 910mm.
Although it’s not quite as jacked as its predecessor, the G 500 4x4², the G 63 4x4 squared is still a relatively impressive set-up for a factory-standard rig, with a ramp-over angle of 40 degrees and an ability to ascend 45-degree inclines.
A full-time four-wheel drive system is part of the package, and although Mercedes-Benz mentions nothing about locking diffs, we’d expect them to be in service along with a dual-range transfer case.
The vehicle also rides on big 22-inch alloy rims shod with heavy-duty all-terrain tyres.
Propulsion is handled by AMG’s highly-fettled 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, worth 430kW and 850Nm torque, driving through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The chunked-up Benz off-roader also gets a number of visual upgrades, all of which are finished in carbon-fibre, including ultra-wide wheel-arch extensions, a roof-mounted LED light bar and spare tyre carrier on the back, complete with full-size spare wheel.
An optional roof rack comes with a tailgate-mounted ladder too.
Customers can choose the Green Hell Magno colour or another 40 exclusive exterior paint jobs by spending a few extra clams with the ‘G manufaktur’ custom shop.
The latter will also customise things like the Nappa leather upholstery and will even add timber floorboards to the boot.
“This G-Class special model can be customised like never before,” boasts Mercedes-Benz, while standard luxury features inside the German mountain-climber include leather and carbon-fibre everywhere, ultra-cool air vents with ambient LED lighting built in and specially engraved logos.
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4² is only available only for a limited period. The car-maker hasn’t said how many units it will build or how much it will cost, but it won’t be cheap.
According to current listings, the regular G 63 starts from $314,897 plus on-road costs.
