The Mercedes-AMG family has inadvertently expanded by one more variant, with confirmation of a new entry-level GT 43 4-Door Coupé.
In the same week the Affalterbach tuner confirmed its forthcoming A 35 hot hatch, the GT43 4MATIC+ was quietly revealed in Europe, where it will go on sale in the coming weeks.
Sitting below the already-confirmed GT 53, GT 63 and GT 63 S variants, the GT 43 employs a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline-six good for 270kW and 500Nm, the latter peak available on a bandwidth of revs spanning 1800 to 4500rpm.
As with many of Mercedes’ new powerplants, the GT 43 uses an ‘EQ Boost’ starter-alternator that chimes in with up to 16kW and 250Nm for short durations.
You’d be correct in surmising these figures sound familiar, because the same drivetrain already does duty in the new CLS450.
In this application, the turbo-six enables a 0-100km/h blast of 4.9 seconds and limited top speed of 270km/h. Not bad for an entry model.
Meantime, fuel consumption is rated between 9.1-9.4L/100km in the European test cycle.
The GT 4-Door is slated for Australian showrooms in the second quarter of 2019. It is understood the GT 43 is not likely to be a part of the local line-up; the CLS450 arguably fills that role already.
