Mercedes-AMG GT 73 4-Door Coupe teased

Benz's performance division signs off 2019 with clip thanking staff that at the end appears to tease plug-in hybrid AMG 73

Mercedes-AMG has released a new video tease of what's believed to be the plug-in hybrid AMG 73 GT 4-Door Coupe ahead of its launch in 2020.

The short film, that runs with the tagline "Together we define the future of performance" features a variety of production AMG models, as well as the forthcoming AMG One hypercar but it's the vehicle featured right at the end of the video that's believed to be the flagship AMG 73.

The fleeting glimpse of the GT 4-Door Coupe involves a clip of a camouflaged rear bumper and a four-tailpipe exhaust that looks identical to the GT 63 S version except, when the car in the film accelerates hard away from the camera, there's an eerie lack of V8 soundtrack.

Instead, all that can be heard is the whirring of an electric motor - the tell-tale sound of the new powertrain that is expected to drive the AMG 73.

Set to produce at least 600kW from its advanced plug-in hybrid version of the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, the Mercedes-AMG GT 73 4-door Coupe will out-gun all its rivals, including the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-hybrid – its closest rival – which currently manages 500kW.

Despite the extra weight of the hybrid add-ons, the all-wheel drive concept car was claimed capable of a 0-100km/h sprint of “less than 3.0 seconds”, plus a pure-electric range of up to 50km.

It’s thought the production version, which will revive the famous Mercedes-AMG ’73’ moniker, has been produced with the sole intention of it becoming the most powerful (and quickest) production four-door car of all time.

It's unclear what price premium Mercedes will charge over the $349,900 (plus on-roads) already asked for the AMG GT 63 – but it's thought it will be considerable.
