Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series recalled

German brand’s limited-edition $800K supercar strikes safety strife

Mercedes-Benz has issued a safety recall for the most ferocious model it has ever sold in Australia – the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

Produced in strictly limited numbers after its global reveal in in 2020, the 500kW-plus Black Series was an instant sell-out, with all 28 examples allocated to Australia spoken for by well-heeled locals before they arrived here in 2021 – despite a list price tag of almost $800,000.

Now, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is being called back to dealerships due to a potential fault with the car’s Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system.

“Due to a manufacturing issue, the wiring harness of the front wheel speed sensors may be damaged and the VDC system may be deactivated. This could result in a loss of vehicle control,” said the recall notice.

Mercedes-Benz says affected vehicles will display warning lights on the instrument cluster to indicate that the electronic stability control system is not activated.

Producing an eye-watering 537kW of power from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8, the rear-wheel drive GT Black Series certainly isn’t the kind of car you’d want to lose control of.

The German car-maker says owners of affected vehicles should contact their nearest authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership to have the work carried out as soon as possible free of charge.
