The price to play with an AMG GT has just jumped by more than $50,000.
The basic GT has been dropped as Mercedes-Benz Australia cuts its high-performance two-seater range to just three cars that reflect demand from local buyers.
But the line-up will grow again when the full-bore GT R Black Series, which is already set for a sell-out and coming with a flat-plane crankshaft in its twin-turbo V8, reaches Australia next year with a showroom sticker beyond $400,000.
The latest two-seater pricing starts at $311,142 for the GT S Coupe, up significantly from the $260,770 for the previous basic GT.
Next up in the newbie coupes is the GT C at $329,843, followed by the GT R at $361,042.
There is only one surviving Roadster model, the GT C, at $355,242.
Mercedes-Benz Australia admits the bottom lines are up slightly, without worrying about the missing starter car, but says the increases are offset by improvements to the two-door GT which flow across from the incoming GT four-door.
“The GT had already had a slight update earlier this year and now there are some worthwhile updates to bring across from the four-door,” the spokesman for Mercedes-Benz Australia, Jerry Stamoulis, tells carsales.
He says the deletion of the GT is a reflection of buyer choices down under.
“The GT is doing what we thought it would do in Australia. Probably the biggest surprise is now high the intake has been for the AMG GT-R and also the GT-C.
“We’ve changed the line-up to reflect that. It’s now the GT S as the entry point in Australia and we’re only offering one Roadster variant.
“So we’ve consolidated the ranged to reflect the most popular GT cars for Australia.”
