Mercedes-AMG is working on a next-generation V8, meaning the iconic burbly engine configuration it’s become famous for won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, and could even multiply.
Speaking recently with Car and Driver, Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe said there was loads of potential for new V8 products in the global line-up, though he stopped short of mentioning the divisive C 63 S.
“We have just launched the GT last year,” he said. “So, there is some years to come with the V8.
“We are in the midst of developing our next-generation of the V8, and I see a lot of positions within our existing portfolio, or maybe even new ones, where we could actually imagine to have a V8.”

Schiebe added the current bent-eight still had plenty of life left in it yet seeing as second-generation GT coupe was only released last year, declaring there was still “some years to come with the [current] V8”.
News of a next-gen V8 first broke in February, when it was confirmed the donk would feature ‘high-tech’ electrification – most likely a complete overhaul of the mighty 600kW/1420Nm plug-in system used in AMG GT coupe and corresponding four-door.
An important note here is that the V8 is sticking around in one form or another indefinitely despite AMG readying a pair of supercar-baiting EVs developed in-house and from the ground up, the first of which will make its global debut next month.
“I always say it needs to be an AMG first and an EV second,” Schiebe said if the upcoming super sedan.

“It’s the sound, it’s the feedback that you get from the car … one thing that is of high importance to us is continuous performance.”
Initially tipped as a successor of the AMG GT 4-door, Schiebe hinted the looming EV super sedan will be offered alongside its V8 hybrid cousin for a long while yet, indicating work may have already begun on a next-generation halo (V8) sedan.
“Let’s see how long we continue with a GT 4-Door,” he told Car and Driver.
“Maybe there is a successor, but I don’t want to speculate about that.”
