VFACTS figures for 2012 are expected to reveal that Mercedes-Benz Australia sold over 1200 AMG cars last year – a new record for the premium high-performance brand.
According to David McCarthy, Senior Manager for Corporate Communications with the prestige importer, sales of the C 63 AMG comprised 765 units, making the V8-engined C-Class variants far and away the most popular in the local AMG product range.
Mr McCarthy explained to motoring.com.au that Mercedes AMG is unprepared to reveal the exact number of AMGs sold, but said that the figure of 1200 units was "exceeded by more than a handful."
Furthermore, the total retail value of the AMG models sold in Australia last year amounted to around "$222 million" – without including the cost of options or performance packs for the C, E and CLS AMG variants. C 63's contribution to that figure was around $120 million and the sales split for the C 63 was 358 sedans, 382 coupes and 25 wagons. AMG-tweaked cars account for nine per cent of C-Class sales, Mr McCarthy said.
The Benz executive observed that AMG is an increasingly important part of the company's product portfolio in Australia.
"One in every 13 [cars] we sell ... is an AMG," he explained, noting also that "More than a hundred [sales] a month is significant."
And the icing on the cake for Benz is the C 63's heavy lifting will help the C-Class stay near the top of imported mid-size cars in Australia. If Mazda sold fewer than 729 units of the Mazda6 in December the C-Class will remain Australia's most popular mid-size import, Mr McCarthy said. Otherwise the gong goes to the new Mazda.
And with Mazda expecting big things for the new '6' – up to 800 or so sales from launch – selling 729 units or more for the month is a very real possibility. This might be the year the C-Class loses its crown. Stop press, January 4: VFACTS reports that the Mazda6 sold 611 units during December, with Richard Emery, General Manager - Sales, Mercedes-Benz Cars claiming a win for the C-Class.
"In one of those interesting statistics the C-Class was actually the second biggest selling medium car in Australia regardless of price," Mr Emery was quoted saying in a press release issued by Mercedes-Benz.
