Mercedes-AMG teases 425kW GT R

Talk of a hotter R-badged version of the Mercedes-AMG GT delivering up to 425kW has circulated for ages, and now there's official confirmation via this teaser video a week out from its world debut.

Revealed here in the lead-up to its global reveal at the UK's Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 24, the Mercedes-AMG GT R is claimed to deliver the “next level of performance” in this 22-second teaser film.

Painted lime green, wearing a 'GT R' bootlid badge and featuring a host of aggressive cosmetic additions including a large fixed rear wing, AMG's new flagship performance coupe will bring a considerable performance lift over its current range-topper, the AMG GT S.

While the latter costs $294,610 plus on-road costs and produces 375kW of power and 650Nm of torque from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, the AMG GT R is expected to be priced will into Porsche 911 Turbo territory at more than $350,000.

It will also bring performance to match, with peak power of up to 425kW and a circa-100kg kerb weight reduction making it quicker than the already-lithe GT S, which weighs 1495kg and is claimed to hit 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

No official details have yet been revealed, but expect bigger wheels/tyres and brakes, a more focussed chassis tune and extra gadgets inside – including what looks like a g-meter – where a sportier cabin theme appears to be mainly black with yellow highlights like Mercedes-AMG GT3 racer and the C63 S Coupe Edition 1.

AMG won't stop there, however, with confirmation in January that an even more ferocious, hard-core Black Series version of the GT will follow, bringing up to 450kW, 0-100km/h acceleration in about three seconds and a circa-$450K pricetag to match the 911 Turbo S.

Like the 911, expect Mercedes-AMG to eventually also offer convertible versions of the GT Black Series, GT R, GT S and the standard GT, which is yet to be made available in Australia.
