Mercedes-Benz Australia has released price and specification details for the 2018 S-Class line-up, which arrives in showrooms boasting new safety and comfort features, design changes and new engines.
With revisions including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, Multibeam LED headlights, Mercedes believes the updated sedan will set “new luxury standards” in the Australian luxury segment.
The S-Class safety repertoire is also enhanced for 2018, thanks to the fitment of Active Braking Assist, Crosswind Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, drowsiness protection and the occupant protection system PRE-SAFE.
For 2018, the flagship adds PRE-SAFE Sound, “which prepares human hearing for the anticipated accident noise when there is a risk of a collision”.
On the automated front, the S-Class is available with active proximity control and active steer assist functions, allowing the car to automatically adjust its speed ahead of curves or junctions. The S-Class will also brake automatically for pedestrians and hazardous situations, such as rear impacts.
The range starts with the S 350d at $195,900 plus on-road costs. Utilising a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel that develops 210kW and 600Nm, the 350d is paired with an official fuel claim of 5.4L/100km combined.
The S 350d features as standard: keyless entry and start, a panoramic sunroof, digital television tuner, power closing doors and bootlid, a Burmester 13-speaker sound system, front seat heating and ventilation, head-up display, 360-degree camera and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Next in the order is the S 400d L, which uses the same 3.0-litre oil-burner as the 350d with outputs ratcheted up to 250kW and 700Nm, priced from $222,500 plus on-road costs.
Meanwhile, the petrol line-up is anchored by the S 450 L, priced from $227,500 plus on-road costs. Powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with 270kW and 520Nm, the 450 is mated standard to a nine-speed automatic.
Both long-wheelbase models share the same equipment specification, which adds electrically adjustable outer rear seats, pre-installation for rear entertainment features, electric blinds on rear side windows and rear window, rear climate control and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The S 560 and S 560 L share a new 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 that develops 345kW and 700Nm. The regular 560 starts at $270,000 while the 560L starts at $295,000.
Distinguishing the 560 models are special trims, AIR-BALANCE package, Nappa leather, anti-theft protection and heat and noise-insulating glass. The L version also gets luxury head restraints and a rear-seat entertainment system.
For performance fans, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 L brings a healthy sporting pedigree to the line-up for 2018.
Priced from $375,000 plus on-road costs, the 63 now gets the ubiquitous 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 fitted to other Affalterbach models, tuned to 450kW and 900Nm in this application and mated with a nine-speed automatic.
The AMG package is offered with the Dynamic Select driving mode suite, carbon-composite brakes, sports suspension and red brake callipers. Inside, there’s seat warmers, multi-contour front seats, AMG-specific styling treatments and an AMG sports pedal cluster.
Sitting atop the line-up is the Mercedes-Maybach S 650, priced from $425,000 plus on-road costs. Fitted with a 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12, the big Maybach is good for 463kW and 1000Nm.
Standard equipment over the S560L includes a 24-speaker Burmester surround sound system, design roof liner with DINAMIC microfiber, Maybach door sills, Nappa leather upholstery, and 20-inch forged wheels.
