The all-new 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe – the two-in-one replacement for the retired C-Class an E-Class coupes – will make its world debut this Wednesday (July 5), the German car-maker has confirmed.
We’ve seen plenty of the CLE in an unofficial capacity over the past year or so thanks to our well-placed spy photographers, but executives have so far been coy about the all-new coupe.
That’s now changed with the first official materials released by Mercedes-Benz, confirming the CLE’s reveal date via an accompanying teaser image showcasing the new coupe’s silhouette.
The image shows the CLE will wear similar headlight and tail-light designs to the latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class, suggesting it will be positioned closer to the mid-size sedan than the larger E-Class – hardly surprising given the previous-generation C-Class Coupe was cheaper and therefore more popular than its E-Class counterpart.
Powertrains will undoubtedly comprise primarily of 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engines boosted by mild-hybrid technology at the very least, however, there’s every chance at least one six-cylinder powerplant will find its way under the bonnet eventually – as per the new E-Class.
What lies in store for the flagship Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 S is anyone’s guess given camouflaged examples of the high-performance flagship have already been spotted testing and featuring a charging port cover.
This tells us the inevitably ballistic two-door will sport an E Performance plug-in hybrid system, but recent developments surrounding the upper reaches E-Class portfolio suggest the BMW M4-poacher could be fitted with an angry six as opposed to the 500kW/1060Nm four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system powering the C 63 sedan.
Either way, AMG version(s) of the all-new CLE will be rabid, even if they’re another 12 months or so away from being revealed.
Excitement for the standard CLE’s reveal is building among Mercedes-Benz fans, with the event confirmation and teaser image being posted as the cover image on the brand’s global Facebook page and attracting nearly 5000 likes and more than 250 comments in less than two days.
Look out for our coverage of the new CLE coupe later this week.
