Mercedes-Benz EQB EV confirmed for 2021

Benz will offer an all-electric version of its new GLB-Class baby SUV within two years

The Mercedes-Benz GLB hasn’t even hit the road yet and the three-pointed star has already confirmed it will electrify its baby G-Wagen by 2021.

Dubbed the EQB, it will be an all-electric, all-wheel drive SUV capable of mild off-road work.

While it hasn’t released full details of the new EV, it’s believed it will retain the option of the GLB’s seven-seat layout within its 4.6-metre body.

“The EQB, an all-electric compact SUV, will be based on the GLB and will be available starting in 2021,” Mercedes-Benz’s Director of Product Management for SUVs, Mathias Geisen confirmed last week.

“It will play an integral part in the extension of our electric-vehicle portfolio.”

Geisen also hinted that stronger four-cylinder engines would find their way inside the GLB’s engine bay as the model’s ramp-up took shape.

The eighth production car off Benz’s heavily upgraded small-car architecture, the GLB (pictured) was always meant to be the hard-core off-roader of the small crossover category, aping plenty of the design details of the mountain-munching G-Wagen.

While the electric EQB will be all-wheel drive, entry-level internal-combustion versions of the new GLB, which arrives in Australia in the third quarter of 2020, will be front-drive.
