The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is the German company’s large SUV model family and is offered in both traditional SUV wagon and Coupe fastback forms.
The current GLE-Class model line-up is the X167 Series in Mercedes’ own language. It was launched in 2019. The coupe body styles is known as the C167. There is a long-wheelbase version sold India only (according to Wikipedia) called the V167.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is offered with a range of turbo diesel and turbo petrol engines including inline four and six-cylinder options plus eight-cylinder Mercedes-AMG variants.
Key competitors of the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class include the BMW X5 Series and Audi Q7 and Lexus RX ranges.
The Mercedes-Benz reputation for reliability is hard won and the very early examples of its SUV ranges did not build on it. The GLE-Class’ ML-Class predecessors had a chequered history in terms of build quality and overall dependability.
The GLE-Class badge itself is new to Mercedes-Benz but corresponds with a general improvement in both the design and build quality of the large SUVs.
The X167 series Mercedes-Benz GLE is too new to have much feedback on ownership issues. Commonly reported minor problems with the superseded X166 series Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class include non-engine electrics including powered tailgate issues and unexplained odours from the air-con system.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is Mercedes’ large SUV. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is categorised as mid-sizer.
The relationship between the two SUVs is not dissimilar to the C-Class and E-Class sedans but the SUV pairing offer comparable interior space.
Although the GLE is more expensive, both it and the GLC include wagons and Coupe variants in their line-ups as well as Mercedes-AMG performance variants. The GLE-Class now features one of Mercedes-AMGs best powertrains – a new turbocharged inline six-cylinder which is strong, sounds great and is silky smooth.
Although the two model families span a considerable spectrum of performance and specification, we would opt for the GLC-Class which delivers better bang for bucks.
The big Mercedes-Benz SUV of choice is the GLS-Class.
