Mercedes-Benz has rolled out its S 600 Guard – a hyper-protective S-Class variant that is rated for protection up to VR9.
It's one step up from BMW's armoured 760Li, which is rated VR7 for glass and VR9 for the car's steel panels. The Benz is certified VR9 for glass as well, which the manufacturer claims is a world first. With carefully designed and constructed glass and underbody protection, the S 600 Guard will resist rounds from firearms with high muzzle velocities, as well as shrapnel and splinters from explosive devices detonated on either side of the car.
Based on the new W222 S-Class, the S 600 Guard is V12 powered and rides on air suspension. The new offering in armoured cars from Stuttgart joins other protective models in the E-Class, M-Class and G-Class ranges already available. High-tensile strength steel reinforcing is added to the S 600 Guard during the production process, and a combination of polycarbonate-coated glass and "aramide and PE components" are also installed for "additional splinter protection."
The S 600 Guard has been developed to be discrete as well as protective, and is barely distinguishable, the manufacturer claims, from the standard S 600. It will seat four or five occupants and can accommodate 350 litres of luggage in the boot.
Benz states that the V12 in the S 600 Guard develops the same output as the standard S 600 – 390kW and 830Nm – but hasn't given a 0-100km/h time or divulged anything else about the car's straightline performance other than the fact it's limited to a 210km/h top speed, "for weight reasons."
The company does say, however, that the air suspension is beefed up for the S 600 Guard application and brakes are uprated too, with six-piston callipers at the front, and larger rotors front and rear. Like the protective BMW, the S 600 Guard rides on Michelin run-flat tyres and can travel up to 30km on damaged tyres to escape danger.
