Mercedes-Benz will offer a more powerful entry-level version of its luxurious roadster, the SL-Class, when the SL400 arrives locally in the last quarter of 2014.
Replacing the $225,000 SL350, whose 3.5-litre V6 produced 225kW/370Nm, the new SL400 flexes it muscles via a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 that pumps out 245kW/480Nm.
The boost in power sees the 0-100km/h time tumble impressively from 5.9 to 5.2 seconds.
Despite the performance hike, Mercedes-Benz says the new model's fuel use will be lower by a whole litre per 100km, dropping from 8.3L/100km to 7.3L/100km.
When the new Mercedes-Benz SL400 arrives later this year it will likely retain the current SL350's almost quarter-of-a-million-dollar pricetag and boast similar features.
The mid-level SL500 ($304,145) retains its twin-turbo 320kW/700Nm 5.7-litre V8, but the SL63 AMG model ($381,145) is expected to get more power soon thanks to the addition of a performance pack that boosts power from 395kW to 430kW.
Sitting at the top of the range is the twin-turbo V12-powered SL65 AMG ($466,145), a 463kW/1000Nm colossus.
More details on the SL400 including price and specification will be announced later in the year.
