The latest Mercedes-Benz X-Class dual-cab 4x4 ute package from Pickup Design studios will make your eyes water.
Dubbed the X-Class EXY Extreme, this gnarly-looking off-roader turns the conservative Mercedes-Benz design on its head, delivering the kind of visual muscle usually associated with exotica – inside and out.
Available in Australia priced from around $49,000 – on top of the price of the ute but including labour – it is backed by the duration of the manufacturer's warranty, so three years if the ute is new.
The EXY Extreme package features a Pedders suspension lift kit that jacks the vehicle by an extra 30mm, increasing visual oomph.
It also adds 18-inch alloy wheels shod with Black Bear mud-terrain or all-terrain off-road tyres with a wider track to match the outrageous rubber/metal wheel-arch extensions.
An aggressive front bumper section, along with a colour-coded front bash plate, bonnet lip, power bulge and headlight frames create more eye candy than a DJ Diplo mega-set, while bringing extra aggression to the front-end.
A Lazer roof-mounted LED light bar adds a bit more menace – not that the X-Class EXY Extreme needs it – while the ute's flanks feature metal side steps.
Take a gander at the chunky pick-up's rear-end and you'll also see a stylised sports bar – or sail plane, if you like – which is backed up by a completely revised rear bumper section featuring a spoiler and wrap-around protective body mouldings.
Graphics can be added to the car's body panels if you require even more visual punch, as can Pickup Design badges that look a bit like Decepticon logos.
The interior fit-out was created by Carlex Design, a Polish company best known for trimming up exotic and luxury cars, not to mention motor yachts.
As such, sports seats with Nappa leather and Alcantara upholstery are part of the package, as is a custom steering wheel, floor mats, Carlex Design logos and a limited-edition plaque.
Beyond all the bodywork and chassis add-ons, customers can also order a special 'V8 exhaust sound system' designed makes the ute sound tougher. The acoustics can be modified on the run via smartphone app.
However, there are no mechanical changes to the Benz ute’s stump-pulling 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel worth 190kW and 550Nm -- enough mumbo to dispatch the 0-100km/h sprint in a hot hatch-like 7.5 seconds.
In total, only 250 EXY Extreme kits will be offered globally, one of which has already been purchased Australia despite being EXY by name and exxy by nature.
The X-Class kit is not cheap at almost $50K but carsales.com.au understands there are several other Aussie customers lining up to order the package.
The vehicle in these images and video is based on a Mercedes-Benz X-Class 350d (priced from $73,270), meaning the Nissan Navara-based ute you see here costs well over $120,000 plus on-road costs.
The EXY Extreme is the second Mercedes-Benz X-Class kit to come following the EXY Urban package we road-tested in 2018.
Clearly, the dual-cab 4x4 ute market is fast becoming a dominant force in the aftermarket modification/accessories scene as more owners desire to stand out of the from the fast-growing crowd.
